Primarily their role is ensure that the Clinton Corners NY clinics, hospitals and other medical care facilities where they work run efficiently. Based on the size or type of facility, they may be more of an administrative assistant, a clinical assistant, or in smaller practices both. They are responsible for providing direct support to the nurses, doctors and other medical professionals but can also be found working in an office or at the front desk. Some of the possible functions of a medical assistant include:

  • Completing insurance forms and submitting claims
  • Setting and verifying appointments
  • Taking vital signs and weighing patients
  • Collecting blood and other tissue and fluid samples
  • Preparing instruments and rooms for physicians
  • Providing basic support during exams and procedures

Although medical assistants can perform almost any activity they are qualified to under New York law, some prefer to specialize in a particular area and attain certification. Two of the options available are for the Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) and the Certified Medical Administrative Assistant (CMAA) offered by the National Healthcareer Association (NHA).

Medical Assistant Programs

Unlike many other healthcare practitioners, medical assistants are not mandated to become certified, licensed, or to earn a college degree. However, a number of Clinton Corners NY health care employers would rather hire graduates of an accredited medical assistant training school (more on accreditation later ) that are certified. There are essentially two choices provided for a formal education. The first and shortest path to becoming a medical assistant is to attain a certificate or diploma. These programs normally take about one year to complete, some as little as 6 to 9 months. They are designed to teach the fundamentals of medical assisting and prepare graduates for entry level positions. The second alternative is to earn an Associate Degree, which are usually 2 year programs offered at junior and community colleges together with vocational and technical schools. They are more expansive in nature than the certificate or diploma programs, and include liberal arts courses in addition to the medical assistant classes. They usually have a practical component involving an internship with a local medical practice. Associate Degrees are often a pre-requisite for and credits can be applied to a four year Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Assistant Studies or a related field.

Online Medical Assistant Programs

As an extra benefit, many online schools have lower tuitions than the more conventional on-campus alternatives. Supplemental expenses such as for commuting, textbooks and school supplies might be lessened also. Just keep in mind that all requirements for clinical training or internships must still be satisfied, but they can usually be completed in Clinton Corners NY area health care facilities. If you can learn without the rigid structure of attending supervised classes on campus, then this mode of getting your training might be the right option for you. Between the online lessons and the practical training, everything necessary to attain proficiency to perform as a medical assistant is provided.

Certification Programs for Medical Assistants

As previously mentioned, certification is not a legal requirement, but is a good choice for graduates who wish to boost their careers. Not only will it help in obtaining a job after graduation, but it can also help with preliminary salary negotiations. Many potential Clinton Corners NY medical employers simply will not hire a medical assistant that has not received certification or accredited formal training. The most popular and arguably the most highly regarded certification is the Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) provided by the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA). To qualify to apply for the CMA exam, a candidate must have graduated or will graduate within 30 days from an accredited medical assistant program. Additional certifications are offered also, including the CCMA and the CMAA that we previously mentioned which are provided by the NHA.

Is the Medical Assistant School Accredited? There are many great reasons to make sure that the program you enroll in is accredited. First, accreditation helps ensure that the instruction you receive will be both extensive and of the highest quality. Next, if you plan on becoming certified, you must enroll in an accredited program. Two of the acknowledged organizations for accreditation are the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) and the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES). If your school is not accredited by either of these agencies, you will not be allowed to take the CMA exam. Additionally, if you intend on obtaining a student loan or financial assistance, they are often not available for non-accredited programs. And last, as mentioned previously, a number of potential Clinton Corners NY employers will not employ a medical assistant who has not graduated from an accredited school.

What is the Program’s Passage Percentage? Most of the accredited medical assistant schools create their programs to prep students to pass one or more certification exams. To start with, you must find out which of the certifications the programs you are reviewing are preparing their students for. If you are planning on taking the CMA for example, then obviously you will want to select a program targeting that certification. Second, learn what the program’s passage rate is for the certification and contrast it to the national average. This is just one of the means to help assess the quality of a college’s program. Obviously programs with low rates are those that you will want to avoid.

Which Programs are Available? As we previously covered, there are basically two paths to getting medical assistant training. Or you can opt to obtain an Associate Degree and get a broader education that will take approximately two years to complete in a junior college or trade school. Whichever program you choose to pursue, make sure that the schools you are reviewing provide the type of program you have an interest in.

If a college has a high job placement rate for its graduates, it indicates that it has a good reputation within the health care community. It also indicates that it has a large network of employers to help place students in jobs.

How Large are the Classrooms? Class size may be an indication of how much individual instruction you will get throughout your training. Small classes and classes with a higher teacher to student ratio are more likely to provide greater access to instructors and face to face interaction. If convenient, try to monitor a few classes before selecting a program to see what the teaching atmosphere is like and just how much attention the students get.

Is Class Scheduling Accessible? If you anticipate attending a medical assistant school while you continue working on a full time basis, it’s imperative that the program you select offers classes that accommodate your schedule. If you need to attend classes in the evenings or on weekends near Clinton Corners NY, verify that those times are offered. You may be able to fit your classes in more conveniently with an online college, but you will also need to schedule all internships or practical training that may be required. Additionally, find out what the protocol is for making up classes that you might have to miss due to work, illness or family responsibilities.

Enrolling in a Medical Assistant Program near Clinton Corners New York?

If you are considering attending a medical assistant school in the Clinton Corners NY area, following is some background information that may be both interesting and useful regarding your future campus location.

Clinton, Dutchess County, New York

Clinton is a municipal subdivision of Dutchess County, New York, United States. The population was 4,312 at the 2010 census.[1] The town as a governmental subdivision is standard in New York and New England and analogous to townships in other regions.

The current boundaries of the town of Clinton were set in 1821. The general area was part of a British land grant in 1697 known as the Great Nine Partners Patent. In 1734 a soil survey was done in the Great Nine Partners patent running in 1 1/2 mile wide strips from the Hudson river east through the patent. The particular strip running at the bottom of the patent including the future hamlet of Clinton Corners was classified as good land. In 1737 the patents were reorganized into precincts, with the current town of Clinton being part of the Charlotte precinct from 1762 until 1788. In 1788 the Dutchess County Legislature reorganized the precincts into towns with Clinton formed from parts of Charlotte and Rhinebeck precincts and named in commemoration of the service of Governor George Clinton. In 1821 the current boundaries were set when the towns of Pleasant Valley and Hyde Park were created out of the larger Clinton township.

The early European settlers in Clinton filtered in from two main directions. In the early 1700s, Rhinebeck was the largest settlement in Dutchess County taking advantage of the Hudson River for transportation of people and produce. Across Dutchess county to the east the settlements of Amenia and Wassaic in the Harlem river valley were also attracting European settlers. In 1718 a road was established branching off from the central Wassaic-Poughkeepsie road to connect to the northern Amenia-Rhinbeck road at the Crum Elbow creek crossing. In 1748 the road commissioners from Rhinebeck and Crum Elbow precincts met at the bridge over Crum Elbow Creek to discuss the "old wissasiek road" (pg.15) which had been in existence for 30 years. One of those commissioners was Mordecai Lester. His home and his son's home were mentioned in the commission's report as landmarks along the road north and south of the hamlet of Clinton Corners.
