Townsend, Montana

Lewis and Clark passed through on the voyage of discovery in 1805, although the first white settlers, homesteaders and Civil War veterans in search of gold, did not arrive until the late 1860s.[5] In 1883, a railstop was established as businesses became established supporting gold mining in the region. Townsend was named by railroad officials, in honor of the wife of Charles Barstow Wright, president of the Northern Pacific (1875–1879).

Townsend is located at 46°19′13″N 111°31′4″W / 46.32028°N 111.51778°W / 46.32028; -111.51778 (46.320218, -111.517642).[6] and is situated at approximately 3800 feet above sea level. Townsend is located approximately 35 miles from Helena, the state capital and 35 miles from the convergence of the Jefferson, Madison, and Gallatin rivers which form the headwaters of the Missouri River. Nicknamed "the first city on the Missouri River", Townsend sits nearby the southern tip of Canyon Ferry Lake (a part of, and fed by, the Missouri River) a popular recreation destination and Montana's third largest body of water.

As of the census[2] of 2010, there were 1,878 people, 822 households, and 495 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,188.6 inhabitants per square mile (458.9/km2). There were 888 housing units at an average density of 562.0 per square mile (217.0/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 95.5% White, 0.2% African American, 1.5% Native American, 0.3% Asian, 0.7% from other races, and 1.8% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.8% of the population.

Wolf Point, Montana

Wolf Point is a city in and the county seat of Roosevelt County, Montana, United States.[4] The population was 2,621 at the 2010 census.[5] It is the largest community on the Fort Peck Indian Reservation. Wolf Point is the home of the annual Wild Horse Stampede, held every year during the second weekend of July. Wolf Point's Wild Horse Stampede is the oldest rodeo in Montana, and has been called the "Grandaddy of Montana Rodeos".[6][7][8]

Wolf Point is located in north-eastern Montana in the wide, shallow valley of the Missouri River, just below its confluence with Wolf Creek. Wolf Point is situated on the High Plains of eastern Montana. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.88 square miles (2.28 km2), all of it land.[1]

The city is located on the north bank of the Missouri River, the southern part occupying the ancestral floodplain of that river. The northern part occupies south facing, low-lying hills overlooking a terrace.[9] The central business district is located in the described southern portion.

Trout Creek, Montana

Trout Creek is a census-designated place (CDP) in Sanders County, Montana, United States. The population was 261 at the 2000 census. Trout Creek was proclaimed "Huckleberry Capital of Montana" by the state's legislature in 1981.

This climatic region is typified by large seasonal temperature differences, with warm to hot (and often humid) summers and cold (sometimes severely cold) winters. According to the Köppen Climate Classification system, Trout Creek has a humid continental climate, abbreviated "Dfb" on climate maps.[2]

As of the census[3] of 2000, there were 261 people, 109 households, and 72 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 139.9 people per square mile (54.2/km²). There were 135 housing units at an average density of 72.4 per square mile (28.0/km²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 93.87% White, 1.92% Native American, and 4.21% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.92% of the population.

This is a list of the counties in the U.S. state of Montana. Montana has two consolidated city-counties—Anaconda with Deer Lodge County and Butte with Silver Bow County. The portion of Yellowstone National Park that lies within Montana was not part of any county until 1978, when part of it was nominally added to Gallatin County, and the rest of it to Park County. Eight counties of the state are composed of two or more words.

The Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS) code, which is used by the United States government to uniquely identify counties, is provided for each county. The FIPS code for each county links to census data for that county.

Turner–Climax Border Crossing

The Turner-Climax Border Crossing connects the towns of Turner, Montana and Climax, Saskatchewan on the Canada–US border. This facility is one of only six joint US-Canada border stations where U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) share a single facility. The rationale for making this facility a joint border station was primarily for officer safety, since the border stations on both sides of the border were often staffed by only one officer at a time.[1]

Construction on the joint facility was completed in 1992. It is reached from the south via Montana State Highway 241 (MT 241) and from the north via Saskatchewan Highway 37 (SK 37). Along SK 37, the village of Climax lies 24 km (15 mi) north of the Port with the town of Shaunavon an additional 50 km (31 mi) beyond. The unincorporated community of Turner lies 10 mi (16 km) south on MT 241.

The Canadian side is called "Port of Climax", and on the American side is the "Port of Turner"; the latter was built by CBP in 1992.[2] The city of Havre is only a short drive from the Port. SK 37 offers a north-south route to connect with Trans-Canada Highway Route 1 at Gull Lake. The RED Coat Trail Highway 13 at Shaunavon commemorates the role of the North-West Mounted Police in settling the Canadian West.

Twin Bridges, Montana

Twin Bridges is a town in Madison County, Montana, United States. It lies at the confluence of the Ruby, Beaverhead and Big Hole Rivers which form the Jefferson River.[5] Twin Bridges is a well-known fly fishing mecca for trout anglers.[6] The population was 375 at the 2010 census.

Four Indian trails came together at a bend of the Beaverhead River north of the present school building in Twin Bridges. These trails were used by early settlers and freight companies, and helped to establish where the community of Twin Bridges would develop. Judge M.H. Lott came to Montana in 1862, and with his brother John T. Lott, settled in the Ruby Valley in 1864. In 1865 they built a bridge across the Beaverhead River, and later built another bridge across the Beaverhead at the Point of Rocks. The Lott brothers continued development of roads and promoted settlement of the town, which was incorporated in 1902, with M.H. Lott as the first mayor.

As of the census[3] of 2010, there were 375 people, 172 households, and 94 families residing in the town. The population density was 390.6 inhabitants per square mile (150.8/km2). There were 206 housing units at an average density of 214.6 per square mile (82.9/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 96.0% White, 0.5% African American, 0.5% Native American, 0.8% from other races, and 2.1% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.9% of the population.

Victor, Montana

As of the census[3] of 2000, there were 859 people, 351 households, and 230 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 537.6 people per square mile (207.3/km²). There were 375 housing units at an average density of 234.7 per square mile (90.5/km²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 96.16% White, 0.12% African American, 1.51% Native American, 0.12% Pacific Islander, 0.70% from other races, and 1.40% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.56% of the population.

There were 351 households out of which 34.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.1% were married couples living together, 10.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.2% were non-families. 27.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 9.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 2.97.

In the CDP, the population was spread out with 29.2% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 27.5% from 25 to 44, 21.0% from 45 to 64, and 15.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females, there were 90.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.6 males.

Hot spring

A hot spring is a spring produced by the emergence of geothermally heated groundwater that rises from the Earth's crust. While some of these springs contain water that is a safe temperature for bathing, others are so hot that immersion can result in injury or death.

The related term "warm spring" is defined as a spring with water temperature less than a hot spring by many sources, although Pentecost et al. (2003) suggest that the phrase "warm spring" is not useful and should be avoided.[14] The US NOAA Geophysical Data Center defines a "warm spring" as a spring with water between 20 and 50 °C (68 and 122 °F)

Water issuing from a hot spring is heated geothermally, that is, with heat produced from the Earth's mantle. In general, the temperature of rocks within the earth increases with depth. The rate of temperature increase with depth is known as the geothermal gradient. If water percolates deeply enough into the crust, it will be heated as it comes into contact with hot rocks. The water from hot springs in non-volcanic areas is heated in this manner.

West Yellowstone, Montana

West Yellowstone is a town in Gallatin County, Montana, adjacent to Yellowstone National Park. The population was 1,271 at the 2010 census. The town is served by Yellowstone Airport. It is part of the Bozeman, MT Micropolitan Statistical Area. It was founded in June 1908 when the Oregon Short Line Railroad was completed. The town's name changed several times until West Yellowstone was settled upon in 1920.[4]

For many, the town of West Yellowstone is a place to stay while traveling through Yellowstone National Park. The town is separated into two parts, residential and commercial, roughly at the road D Parkway. South of D Parkway (Alley) is mainly a business area; north of it is an area of homes and apartments. The area north of D Parkway is known to locals as the "Madison Addition". The town has one school, serving kindergarten through 12th grade.[5]

As of the census[2] of 2010, there were 1,271 people, 617 households, and 298 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,588.8 inhabitants per square mile (613.4/km2). There were 969 housing units at an average density of 1,211.3 per square mile (467.7/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 86.6% White, 0.4% African American, 1.1% Native American, 0.9% Asian, 7.5% from other races, and 3.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 17.9% of the population.

Westby, Montana

Westby was founded in 1910 as a town in what was then Williams County, North Dakota (now in Divide County). Danish settlers came up with the name by combining the word west, which noted the town's location in extreme western North Dakota, with the word by, Danish for town. The town remained in North Dakota until 1914, when it was moved slightly across the border so as to be next to a newly built branch line of the Soo Line Railroad and in a state that permitted the sale of alcohol.[5][6]

As of the census[2] of 2010, there were 168 people, 82 households, and 49 families residing in the town. The population density was 311.1 inhabitants per square mile (120.1/km2). There were 114 housing units at an average density of 211.1 per square mile (81.5/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 95.8% White, 2.4% Native American, and 1.8% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.8% of the population.

There were 82 households of which 19.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.7% were married couples living together, 3.7% had a female householder with no husband present, 2.4% had a male householder with no wife present, and 40.2% were non-families. 36.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 12.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.05 and the average family size was 2.67.
